Sport Controversy

Sport Controversies of 2014 Worth the Tears

Sports often thrive on controversy. Nobody remembers the dull game, but they always remember the game that ends on a controversial call, or has an incident during the game that changes the momentum of the sport. Controversies have been part of what draws more attention to a team or sport and whether they cause negative or positive feedback, the free advertising controversy provides is great for bringing in more fans and money. When it comes to 2014, there have been many sports controversies both on and off the field. Take a look at these worthy conflicts that have changed the game for players and fans alike.

World Cup 2014

All the world stopped to watch the 2014 World Cup, and for those who like controversy, they were not disappointed. Of all the crazy turns of the tournament, perhaps the biggest involved Uruguay’s Luis Suarez and his penchant for biting opponents. During his team’s 1-0 victory over Italy on June 26, Suarez was cited for biting Giorgio Chiellini of Italy while going for a loose ball. As a result, Suarez was banned from the remainder of the World Cup and found himself vilified for his actions.

Donald Sterling and the L.A. Clippers

During the NBA playoffs this past spring, controversy erupted when Clippers owner Donald Sterling was caught on audio tape using a variety of racially-insensitive remarks directed at African-Americans. Because his team is composed mostly of African-Americans and coached by Doc Rivers, also an African-American, the remarks quickly stirred lots of reaction among fans and the team. Since the team was involved in the playoffs at the time of the incident, there were rumors of a possible boycott of the playoff games by the players. It was also reported that coach Rivers, who has a Master’s in coaching education, stated he would not return as coach if Mr. Sterling continued on as owner. After an investigation, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver banned Sterling from the league for life and forced the sale of the team.

Washington Redskins Name Game

Controversy continued to swirl around the debate of how offensive this team’s name is to Native Americans. Owner Daniel Snyder, despite pressure to change the name, again reiterated there would be no name change this or any other year as long as he was owner. However, on June 18 the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office canceled the team’s federal trademark registrations, saying the name was too offensive. Despite this, Snyder vowed to fight on, so undoubtedly more legal action will follow.

While sports can certainly be more exciting when a bit of controversy exists, it can also take away from the joy of being a fan. Due to negative review and publicity, these and other controversies have meant taking a hit for the game in terms or fans and supporters. We all know how exciting these escapades can be, but many teams now take steps to prevent these from ever occurring. As 2014 marches to an end, hopefully the action on the field will surpass the controversy taking place off the field.

Sports Medicine and its Importance to an Athlete’s Health

They bring excitement, hope, fear, anger, inspiration, a career either as a sportsman or an athlete, a coach, a commentator, a trainer or a sports medicine professional. Professional sports has given us sports medicine.  Anyone who has an active lifestyle, a non professional athlete or  just an average joe who wants to be fit owe their health to professional sports and sports medicine.

What is Sports Medicine?

By definition, sports medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with the treatment and prevention of injuries that are related to sports and exercise. It also focuses on the physical fitness of an athlete or an individual. The role of this specialized field continues to gain popularity and prominence because more and more people are engaged in sports. Practicing individuals in this field are trained professionals which have undergone degrees and specialized training before going out in the field.

This medical field is not on focused or restricted to medicine and surgery of athletes. The specialized practice has expanded and now includes health and wellness professionals such as physiotherapist, nutritionists, psychologists, personal health managers, coaches and physicians that are trained in treating and rehabilitating sports injuries.

These therapies and cure to sports injuries are proven to be effective, you just have to choose the right sports doctor and the right sports medicine facility.

Base Jumping

5 Of The World’s Most Dangerous Sports

If you thought rugby was a dangerous sport due to its heavy tackles, then you are yet to find out what the world of sports has to offer. There are so many dangerous sports out there that you probably never knew about and if you did, maybe you do not know how dangerous they are.

Here is a quick look at 5 of the world’s most dangerous sports and the main factors that make them dangerous.

1. Base Jumping

If you stare into the sky and notice an object descending at a very high speed, it might be a plane, a bird or most probably, a base jumper. This type of sport is all about jumping from a tall building, bridge or cliff through the help of a parachute.

The most dangerous part of this sport is the fact that if the parachute develops any technical problem, the jumper will have to land on the ground with a thud. According to a recent study, around 5 to 15 people die yearly due to this dangerous sport.

Base Jumping

2. Cave Diving

This sport requires the participant to dive into the water, towards a cave opening. Some of associated risks include low visibility, poor lighting and air loss. In fact, with this sport, you cannot shoot upwards without analysing your aquatic environment because you might smash your head unexpectedly on the roof of a cave.

There have been hundreds of death reports caused by cave diving and according to these reports, most of the victims are technical divers and instructors, therefore proving that nobody is safe when participating in this sport.

3. Big Wave Surfing

So many people think that big wave surfing is as simple as the ordinary surfing. In fact, the chances of drowning or being covered by the rising tides are very high. Some death reports also reveal that the victims of big wave surfing smashed their heads against rocks in the sea while some of them lost their footing, thus leading to slip-offs. As exciting as it may sound, this sport offers dangerous challenges that do not spare both professionals and beginners.

4. Street Lugging

It is impossible to identify the world’s most dangerous sports without mentioning street lugging. This sport was invented by some kids in California and from the look of things, it is not the type of sport that you would wish to take part in, let alone watching it. The participants are required to lie down on their skateboards, their stomach facing upwards as they race down the street.

You do not have to be a professional sports analyst to realise the associated risks of street lugging. First of all, it is very hard for drivers in trucks to notice the participants of this sport and this means that they can be crushed anytime. So, as you take part in this sport thinking that the drivers will avoid you when they see you riding down the street, chances are very high that they did not even notice you, therefore no need to avoid you at the first place.

5. Bull Riding

You have probably watched it on reality television but maybe you do not know how risky it can be to take part in bull riding. The most dangerous aspect of this sport is that even as you land on a soft ground, you will have to worry more about your broken jaws, collarbone, arms, legs or ribs. If that does not happen, you do not have to take a sigh of relief yet because the furious bull will not forgive you for raising his temper.

Next time you plan to participate in bull riding, you just have to ensure that the gods are on your side because not even the cheering crowd can stop the furious bull from advancing towards you.

Anatomy of a Horse Rider

Anatomy of a Horse Rider

Ever wondered what the average horse rider is like? Us too!  Which is why we thought a fun infographic was in order…

The average horse rider will probably have a whole range of kit which is designed to both look good and to protect different parts of the body.  For instance, a top quality riding hat is probably first on the list of riding gear needed – a fall off a horse can seriously damage your noodle, so it makes sense to protect your head as much as possible!

Every horse rider will probably have a whip of some type – this isn’t used to scare or hurt the horse but is used as a sort of remote accelerator pedal – light use of the whip tells the horse to go faster and can in some instances get you out of real trouble when a horse is undecided about a jump.

Of course riding boots are a must for every horse rider – these are used to protect both the feet and the calfs as horse hair can be very abrasive and sweaty – top quality riding boots can give more control to the rider and protect the rider against being dragged if a fall is inevitable.

Moving onto the body, body protectors have come on leaps and bounds in the past few years with some models even including airbags which inflate instantly in the event of a fall. A top quality body protector can protect ribs and internal organs from falls onto rocks – a definite life-saver.

Lastly, riding gloves can stop blistering of the skin on hands and will certainly protect the fingers and palms in a fall.

So you can see… the average horse rider needs certain equipment and clothing to be able to ride!

Snooker Table

Practice Routines To Improve Your Positioning at the Snooker Table

All snooker players need to practice in order to maintain their standards of play. The simple routines below will help players to develop their abilities at positioning the cue ball where they want it for the next shot of a break.

A good, simple way of improving your positional skills at the snooker table is to set up easy-looking pots with one ball and the cue ball. Make these as tricky or as easy as you like, in terms of where the balls are placed and the distance. The key here is to see where the cue ball ends up after you have potted. Use screw, spin and side on the cue ball to make it go where you want to.

Practice making the balls go to certain areas of the table after you have potted.

Snooker Table

To take your practice up to the next level, set up more complex situations and try the same thing. One good drill is to place two red balls in good potting positions at each pocket of the table, one above the pocket and one below. Leave the bottom left pocket free of reds and place the black ball there. Start this drill with the cue ball on the spot where the black usually goes.

The object of the drill is to pot the black and play to get position on one of the reds. If you then pot the red, it stays in its pocket, while the black and the cue ball are replaced in their original positions. You then repeat the process until you have potted all of the reds.

After each pot, remember to replace the cue ball and black back in their original positions, as this will allow you to use the cushions to create spin and angles to set up good table position for the cue ball.

Increase the Challenge

When you have got to grips with this drill, you can increase the level of challenge by adding the colours to the reds and black. This time you place all the colours, including the black, on their spots, while keeping the reds in their positions around the pockets.

The cue ball can be placed anywhere on the table, although between the pink and black is a good place. You then try and pot reds followed by colours, then the colours in order, following the conventional rules of snooker.

These drills are easy to set up and can be used to improve your performance in all cue sports. Always remember that practice and discipline are what separates the good from the great when it comes to sport.

How To Get Ready To Pitch In A Baseball Game

Played by two teams each having nine players, baseball is a batting. For a player to score, he needs to hit the thrown ball with his bat and proceed to touch four bases that are arranged at corners in a series. Such a player therefore plays against the pitcher of the fielding team whose teammates also try to prevent the player from scoring by taking hitters out. The winning team is usually the team with highest number of runs.

The pitcher often is the player with the heaviest responsibility and requires that he is well prepared before the ball is set rolling. There are various ways through which you can prepare and play effectively to enable your team to win.

hand signals

Stretching

Like in any other sport, it is very important to stretch so as to ensure that your body is not only flexible but also well toned. Stretching for a baseball game requires that you focus on your arms as you will need strong arms to pitch. Apart from your upper body, ensure that the rest of your body is also well toned.

Long tossing

Long tossing is another very effective way of getting ready to pitch. This is a process in which you stay close to your teammate for the purpose of staying warm. Every time you receive the ball, step back before stepping forward again whenever you receive balls. This process ensures that you stay warm and therefore capable of playing without any hitches.

Ball throwing

One effective way in getting ready to pitch is to throw balls with your catcher. Doing so provides you with a good opportunity to go over pitching signals or game signs stickers you will employ during the main game. It will be beneficial to ensure that your arms stay warm.

Bullpen

Practicing in a Bullpen with your catcher is one of the most effective ways to getting ready to pitch. This is where you can test your pitches and ascertain whether or not your fastball and off speed are effective. It is from such practice that you get to know the kind of pitch you can successfully employ in an upcoming game.

Your coach

Apart from your teammates and catcher, your coach is a very important person you cannot ignore when it comes to getting ready to pitch. It is your coach you should be very truthful to especially when your arm hurts. Note that it is always a good idea to miss a game rather than pitch with a hurting arm.

Pitching

Pitching during the main game is certainly your ultimate moment as a pitcher. Apart from employing your baseball skills, one important preparation you need to undertake is to ascertain the condition of the hole you will step on when pitching. Do splash some dirt in the hole should it be slippery. This is also the time to watch out for all the pitching signals that your catcher indicates. Should it be necessary, take time out to talk to him if you do not understand the signals he sends. You can use game signs stickers or body language instead of using just fingers.

There is certainly no game that you can play successfully without adequate preparation. Success in baseball, especially as a pitcher requires that you prepare well not only long before a game but also during a game. Whenever it seems necessary, always remember you can always ask for a time out.

Five-a-side football

Five A Side Football – The Coolest Indoor Game There Is

There are some of us, mostly folks who are busy with their work or adult life responsibilities, who want to be able to some activity that is exciting. What we find exciting will obviously be fun and gives us opportunity to spend time with others who are pretty much in the same life boat as we are. However, there are some challenges that need to accommodate by the chosen activity.

For one thing, we aren’t really in the greatest of shapes. Sure, we hit the jogging track occasionally, take the stairs instead of the lift once in a while and avoid junk food as much as possible. Whatever is the activity; it must understand this limitation and take it from there!

One such activity which really fits into the above mentioned scheme of things is Five A Side Football.

Five-a-side football

Benefit Of Playing Indoors

Five a side football facilities are mostly indoors. If you really want to, you could probably find a football center with an outdoor ground. There really are no disadvantages of playing indoors, except that you may not like it if you are a hard core outdoor sort of a person. The benefits of being indoors and playing are many.

For one thing, you have got protection from weather. Real football players, including you back when you were in school or college, would enjoy playing in the rain if it came to it. Can you possibly take such a risk on work weekend? Unlikely. You wan to be able to have your weekend fun and return back with your health intact. If the football match were to be organized outside and it rained, you would have two options – abandon match or run a risk of catching cold.

Simpler Rules

Five a side football is still football, but more like a softer cousin of the main sport. We already told you that you are completely protected from harsh weather in this football. In the same vein of things, you will find that the ground has been made smaller. The idea is to reduce the amount of strain on your body during gameplay, bound to happen with excessive running.

In many ways, the five a side ground is more like a park with football turf on it than an actuall football in terms of size. This works out very well for you because, there are only five players on each side, as against the playing eleven in a regular game. There are less people and hence they only need to cover less ground with their running.

Unlimited Swaps And Other Modifications

In the spirit of making allocation for the casual nature of the game, the match referee of the five a side game would allow for unlimited player swaps during the game. This is of course, assuming that you opted for a referee to be part of the match. Having a referee in itself is optional with these matches. If you do include a referee in your match, that will definitely give you a feel of the real deal. You could have all the usual refinements like the yellow and the red cards.

The goal post is of particular interest in this game. The football ground is smaller, the player count is less and the same goes to the rules. The goal post is made slightly bigger than the real goal post. This makes perfect sense. Hitting the goal post is challenging to put it lightly. With a bigger goal post, you have a bigger target to aim for. Combine this with the other properties of the game like the smaller playing area, you got yourself a goal marathon.

The goal post being wider is not about making the game easy alone. It also about making you feel about yourself and keep the excitement on the higher side. When a match goes on for hours together without anyone scoring any goal, players and those who are watching on the sidelines will get bored. The higher goal post ensures that such a drag session does not happen. This game works on so many different levels and the rules ensure that happens.

Well, there you go. That is pretty much all you need to know about this mini version of the worlds most popular game – Football. Ensure that you get some of your most energetic friends and office colleague’s to ensure a good time. Football being a universal sport, you should not have any problem in filling the ten plus slots that the game demands.

How to Swim

It’s Never Too Late to Learn How to Swim

Swimming is a wonderful activity for people of all ages to enjoy both in a swimming pool as well as in the beautiful oceans around the world, but some people are too afraid to ever learn how to swim. Many times, when young children are too frightened of the water and the risk of drowning, they never quite learn how to swim properly, and then, before they know it, they are adults who still don’t know how to swim, thus limiting them from a fun activity that can bring joy and health to the body.

If you have never been able to learn how to swim, it is never too late to learn. No matter what your age, you can start easing yourself into the water and learning the skills necessary to be a great swimmer, confident of yourself in the water.

Here are some tips to get you started if you want to teach yourself how to swim. Do so with the company of friends and family who already know how to swim in order to ensure your safety throughout the learning process.

How to Swim

Learn to Float

Stay in the shallow end of a pool while you learn to swim. The still waters of a pool are easier to learn in than the ocean. Make sure you are able to touch the floor and then, grasping the edge, try to allow your feet to float upward. The buoyancy you experience naturally should allow you to do so easily, as long as you are relaxed and not fearful.

Once you establish a sense of half of your body floating, attempt to float on your back. This technique will help you if you ever find yourself in water too deep to put your feet down to the floor. Floating on your back is very easy if you elongate your body and allow your legs, with core stability, to float upward. Don’t let the feeling of water on your ears deter you, as you will get used to all the sensations.

Learn to Feel Comfortable Underwater

If you need to, wear goggles to ease yourself completely under the water. Exhale or hold your breath for as long as you can comfortably do so, then push yourself back up out of the water. This may take some practice, but it will build your confidence as a swimmer.

Learn to Kick

To propel yourself through the water, you must first learn to kick with your legs. Try different techniques while you are holding onto the edge of the pool or floating on your stomach or back. You will note how far you go with different types of kicks. Remember to incorporate your arms to propel yourself further and keep yourself afloat.

Once you know how to move yourself through the water with your head above the water line, do the same thing underwater. See which one you like more. Wear goggles underwater to see where you are going, if you fear opening your eyes.

Try Different Strokes

Once you are really secure, you can begin incorporating various strokes, such as breaststroke, backstroke, and sidestroke. Before you know it, you will be swimming laps and racing with friends.
